Quickstart + Programs
Thanks to a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, Galveston College is able to offer a new Quickstart + program designed to help people learn foundational skills in the fast-growing HVAC and Electrical industries. The hybrid program runs for 8 weeks, and you will be presented with the basics of a trade including safety procedures, proper tool usage, regulations, codes and more. This program is designed for people to learn the basics of a trade and start making money right away.
We not only offer job training, but career counseling and safety certifications with both NCCER and OSHA as well. Tuition is covered for everyone accepted into the program. However, if you are accepted into the program, you will need to purchase your own steel toe boots and Personal Protective clothing.
Are you 18 years of age or older?
Proof of age is required, such as driver license or birth certificate.
Are you a United States citizen or certified to work in the United States? A Social Security card or original I-9 documentation is required.
If male, do you meet the Selective Service registration requirement?
Most males have already registered and can print out the registration verification
form or get additional information: Get verified
Must have a working computer and internet access
Must have steel toe boots and proper PPE
Following acceptance into the program, the applicant must meet with Galveston College’s Grant Navigator Doreen Bridges and bring required documents listed above.

Details about our Quickstart Electrical Helper program
Our Quickstart+ Electrical Helper program will include the following courses that are taught in a mixture of online and face-2-face skills learning for 8 weeks and a total of 200 Contact hours

Pipefitter Helper: Earn this OSA Certificate in just 16 weeks!
This course follows the curriculum for NCCER Pipefitting Core and Level 1 and covers the mathematical operations necessary to calculate laying lengths of pipe fittings for fabrication, identification and use of hand tools and power tools, as well as identification of pipe, pipe fittings, flanges, and fasteners used in the trade. Students who successfully complete this training will receive NCCER credentials, job placement assistance, and be able to work as a pipefitter’s helper. The average wages are currently $18 to $24 per hour in the Houston Galveston area.

For Pipefitter Helper, classes will meet Monday thru Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Applied Technology Center Campus at 7626 Broadway.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS!
- Must be a legal resident living on Galveston Island
- Must be unemployed, or recently laid off
- Must be eligible to work and provide a Social Security number or ITN#
- Relationship or referral from other community partners for support services if needed. (i.e. Galveston Urban Ministries, Galveston Housing Authority, Restorative Justice)
Ready to Register?
Registrations must be completed 1 week prior to classes starting. Students can register online, by email or in- person on the first floor of Moody Hall, M-142.
