A new career in a heartbeat!
Study the heart’s anatomy, function, how it produces electricity, and how one records
this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course addresses the EKG
changes of commonly seen diseases, especially coronary artery disease and important
heart rhythm disturbances. Successful completion should prepare students to take the
NHA certification exam and introduce them to skills necessary for employment in the
field. This program is stackable into the Patient Care Tech pathway.
- Students must enroll in ECRD 1011 and complete the 64 hours of the program to receive
a certificate of completion.
- Online study guide and practice tests are included in the tuition.
- Students must meet healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling in the course.
- The course includes one attempt at the certification exam. This exam will be scheduled
by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
- This program is eligible for a TPEG funds, and payment plan.
- Hands-on labs are provided in classroom and students are expected to recruit volunteers
and family members to practice EKG's on during this time.
Electrocardiography (EKG/ECG) is the study of the measurement of electrical activity
in the heart and the recording of such activity as a visual trace on paper or a cardiac
monitor, using electrodes placed on the skin of the limbs and chest.
The EKG Technician course presents the student with knowledge of the heart’s anatomy,
physiology, function, how it produces electricity, and how one records this electricity
with an EKG machine and/or a telemetry monitor. The course explores how to interpret
EKG changes in commonly seen diseases and important heart rhythm disturbances. This
course introduces the student to the skills required for employment in an EKG stress
testing laboratory, as well as an ambulatory EKG monitoring center. Upon successful
completion of this course the student should prepare the student to take the National
Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified EKG Technician (CET) examination. Included
in the cost of this course is one attempt at the CET examination, which will be scheduled
by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
This program is eligible for a payment plan, and additional funding sources may exist
for qualified students. The textbook and study guide, and practice exams are included
with the tuition. Students must have a valid American Heart Association BLS-CPR prior
to enrolling in the course, and meet the Healthcare program requirements. Classes
are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters. Please check our schedule for
updated course offerings.
