Galveston College Quickstart program students

Galveston College Quickstart program students attend orientation

More than 40 Galveston College Quickstart program students attended an orientation program today for the eight-week training programs in the fast-growing HVAC and electrical industries.

High demand exists for electrical and HVAC helpers. These professions rank among the fastest growing trades. They provide stable, long-term employment with excellent opportunities for salary growth. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted 14% growth in the need for electricians and HVAC technicians between 2014 and 2024. Each industry is adding tens of thousands of jobs – much faster than the average for all industries.

Wages for skilled workers average between $45,000 and $50,000 per year. The most experienced and hardest working people can make more than $70,000 per year. Of course, beginners make less; helpers in these trades average about $30,000 per year, but can advance quickly. Galveston College provides hands-on training for real-world opportunities such as these.

Galveston College HVAC program visited Mood Gardens

HVAC Quickstart students visit Moody Gardens

Students in Galveston College’s Quickstart HVAC Helper Training class recently enjoyed a visit to Moody Gardens HVAC and electrical operations plant.

On this trip, students had a chance to expand their horizons from practice HVAC equipment in their classroom to massive, commercial equipment in the real world, thanks to the generosity of Moody Gardens Human Resources Manager Kathleen Durham, Plant Engineer David Greer and teacher Karen Alsept, who facilitated the experience.

While on site, the students toured the chillers that provide air conditioning for the Moody Gardens complex, the control room and other areas of the complex.

The free program is funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. New HVAC Quickstart classes will run from June 4 to July 30 from 5-10:30 p.m. at Galveston College’s Applied Technology Center.

For more information, call Mary Powers at (409) 944-1287 or email her at [email protected].
