Promote your department, organization at the Fall 2019 Involvement Fair
Looking for a way to promote your department, program, organization or service? Here’s your opportunity!
The Galveston College Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association will host a campus and community Involvement Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mary Moody Northen Center Atrium.
Organizations, departments and programs that are interested in participating in the Involvement Fair can contact Cynthia Parra at [email protected] with the following information by noon on Friday, Sept. 6:
- Club, organization or department name
- Representative name (person that will be stationed at table)
- Representative cell phone number
- Representative office number
- Representative email address
Tables and chairs will be provided. Participants are encouraged to have sign-in sheets to capture contact information and to provide their own tablecloths and marketing materials. Giveaways and promotional items are highly recommended.
The Office of Student Activities and SGA will provide food and beverages.

Galveston College sets Week of Welcome
The Galveston College Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association have planned a Week of Welcome (WOW) from Aug. 26 to 29 in celebration of the beginning of the fall 2019 semester.
On Monday, Aug. 26, join the Student Government Association for free breakfast and beverages from 7:30-10 a.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students will receive their official free Galveston College planner and will have an opportunity to meet the 2019-2020 SGA officers.
Later that day, there will be a Mix and Mingle with the SGA from 5-7 p.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students are invited to enjoy free snacks and beverages, to play board games, to network, to pick up a free copy of the Galveston College planner and to meet the SGA officers.
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, join the Student Government Association for free breakfast and beverages from 7:30-10 a.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students will receive their official free Galveston College planner and will have an opportunity to meet the 2019-2020 SGA officers.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, there will be a blood drive hosted by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing – West.
On Thursday, Aug. 29, there will be a Game Truck Video Game Party from 3-5 p.m. in the parking area at Avenue Q 1/2 and 39th Street. The game truck is loaded with video consoles and a massive library of video games.
The Fall 2019 Involvement Fair is set for Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mary Moody Northen Center Atrium. Student organizations, departments, programs and community organizations will host informational tables. Come to learn more about the many ways to get involved at Galveston College. Free pizza will be served.

Galveston College accepts applications for student ambassadors
Galveston College is accepting applications from now through Sept. 19 for student ambassadors for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The Galveston College Ambassadors program is a leadership opportunity for students who are dedicated to serving and representing Galveston College.
What is a Galveston College Ambassador?
Galveston College Ambassadors are a select a group of dedicated student leaders who give service in the fall and spring semesters to the college and surrounding communities. Ambassadors are also liaisons between faculty, staff, students and the community.
Galveston College Ambassadors support, promote and represent Galveston College through volunteerism at campus and community events, such as campus tours, student activities, recruiting events, banquets, galas and meetings. Galveston College Ambassadors may be asked to appear in college promotional materials, commercials and videos.
What does a student ambassador receive?
- Stipend of $100 per month for the months of August, September, October, November, February, March, April and May
- Official Galveston College attire to wear when representing Galveston College as an ambassador
The deadline to submit references and applications is Thursday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. in person to the Office of Student Activities, Cheney Student Center Room 110, or via email to [email protected].

Galveston College announces fall 2019 Food for Thought market dates
Galveston College has announced fall 2019 distribution dates for the Food for Thought mobile farmers market on the college’s main campus at Avenue Q 1/2 and 39th Street and at the Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center, 7626 Broadway Street. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up, check in, distribution and clean up.

Food for Thought is a partnership between Galveston College, the Galveston County Food Bank and the Houston Food Bank through its Food for Change food scholarship initiative.
The Food for Thought market gives students access to fresh produce, meats and other groceries on the Galveston College campus, enabling them to save money for other necessities and to maintain their focus on school.
“The food scholarship assists with lowering grocery expenses throughout the semester and allows students to stay fueled and healthy while pursuing their educational goals,” said Cynthia Parra, student activities coordinator and Food for Thought market coordinator at Galveston College.
Currently enrolled students can obtain client ID cards in the Galveston College Counseling and Advising Center on the first floor of Moody Hall on the main campus or the office at the Applied Technology Center and enroll online by visiting the Food for Change page on the Houston Food Bank website.
Students also can locate unrestricted Food for Change markets by using the Houston Food Bank Mobile App. Food for Change markets are labeled to help clients identify all markets available to all Food for Change recipients.

Student Activities and SGA sponsor Juneteenth celebration
Galveston College recognized the oldest celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States with a Juneteenth luncheon on June 19 in the Cheney Student Center dining room.
The Galveston College Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association partnered with Mr. C’s Dugout to provide a soul-food lunch menu, including smothered pork chops, white rice, cabbage, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, black-eyed peas and cornbread.
The SGA served up free peach cobbler and ice cream and shared a poster display with information on the history of Juneteenth in Galveston and in the USA.
Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day.
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. However, slaves were not set free in the Confederacy until the Union army was able to come in and take over. On June 18, 1865, the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas. The next day, June 19, General Gordon Granger announced that the slaves in Texas were free by order of the president of the United States.
The former slaves in Galveston celebrated the day that they were set free. The first Juneteenth celebration took place the very next year. The annual celebration began to spread throughout Texas and surrounding states. In 1980 it became an official state holiday in Texas.

Workforce Programs Career Fair is May 30
The Galveston College Workforce Programs Career Fair is set for Thursday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center, 7626 Broadway St., Galveston.

39th Annual Student Art Exhibition is May 7-Sept. 27
The Galveston College Art Department will host the 39th Annual Galveston College Student Art Exhibition from May 7 to Sept. 27 in the third floor Fine Arts Gallery on the Galveston College campus.
There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, May 7, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A variety of art, including ceramics, paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed media, will be on display.
