What is STEM Honors?

STEM HONORS

The GC STEM Honors Program is a student organization made up of academically motivated students that plan to major in any of the science, technology, engineer or math (STEM) fields. The GC STEM Honors program provides students with academic enhancements and support systems that they may not otherwise have access to.

What are the benefits of being part of the GC STEM Honors Program?
  • Opportunity for National Science Foundation(NSF) STEM Scholarship
  • Opportunity to participate in a Study Abroad program in Summer 2018
  • Access to faculty mentors to help guide you to your academic goal
  • Recognition as graduating with honors on your degree and transcript
  • Competitive advantage on future transfer and scholarship applications
  • Opportunity to network with students with similar motivations and interests
Who can participate?
  • Anyone that plans to major in any of the science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields.
  • Students that have a high potential to develop academic talent and who are highly motivated.
  • Students with an average of 2.8 GPA or higher over their prior two semesters at GC. The GPA expectation does not apply to new students, but new students are definitely encouraged to participate.
What are the criteria for participation in the STEM Honors Program?
  • Once in the STEM Honors program, you will be assigned a faculty mentor that you will meet with 2 to 3 times per term.
  • Once in the STEM Honor program, you must earn a 2.8 GPA or above each term.
  • You will earn 10 honor points per term to maintain your STEM Honor student status. Many opportunities are provided each term to earn honor points.
  • You will complete one Honor Contract per term to maintain your STEM Honor student status. Completion of an Honor Contract will also earn 4 honor points.
  • To earn the Honor designation on your diploma and transcript, you must earn a total of 40 or more honor points.
  • To qualify for the NSF STEM Honor Scholarship, you must be enrolled full-time.

STEM Honors Program Application
  • Instructions:
    1. Download the application form
    2. Complete the application
    3. Request a recommendation from two current or previous faculty/teachers. Recommendation from an advisor, principle/dean, or current employer may also be used.
    4. Request your GC transcript. If you are new to GC, provide a HS transcript or some other verification of high school completion.
    5. Provide a writing sample. You may provide previous work or you may write original text.
    6. Return the completed application with the requested supporting documents to the STEM Honor Program Director, Dr. Ana Sanchez (asanchez@gc.edu or 409-944-1330).

Instructions:

  1. Review the eligibility requirements
    1. You must be a STEM Honors Program participant
    2. You must be enrolled full-time (12 or more hours)
    3. You must be pursuing a degree in a STEM area/discipline
    4. You must have an average (2.8) or better GPA over the past two terms at GC
    5. You must be able to demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship
    6. You must be a U.S. citizen, National of the U.S., Alien admitted as a Refugee, or a lawfully permanent resident

  5. Deadline for application for Fall 2018 is Friday October 5, 2018.
  6. If you are determined to be an eligible applicant, an interview will be scheduled to make final selections for the NSF Scholars.
