Start a family holiday tradition with Making Gingerbread Houses

Nothing announces the beginning of the holiday season like a festive gingerbread house. Learn how to make one of your own during a four-evening class this December at Galveston College.

The Galveston College Culinary Arts program will host Making Gingerbread Houses on Monday through Thursday, Dec. 2-5, from 6-8 p.m. Start a fun family holiday tradition with the skills you’ll learn.

Instructor Chef Mirta Salinas will offer tips and tricks on making a great gingerbread house from scratch, complete with all of the festive decorations and gingerbread people.

Each participant will make and decorate his or her own gingerbread house. The class is open to students of all ages. Students under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The cost for the class is $29 per person. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

Due to campus construction, the Continuing Education department has temporarily moved to the Cheney Student Center on the Galveston College main campus, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas.

Galveston College to offer Certified Nurse Aide, EKG Tech and Phlebotomy Tech courses this summer

Galveston College will be offering a Certified Nurse Aide course, an EKG Technician course and a Certified Phlebotomy Technician course this summer.

The Certified Nurse Aide course, which explores the key components set by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, starts on June 4 and runs through Aug. 1. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. CNA clinicals are completed at area nursing homes. Cost of the course is $899.

The Certified EKG Technician course, which focuses on the heart’s anatomy, function, how it produces electricity and how to record the electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor, will be offered from June 5 to Aug. 5. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost of the course is $899.

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician program, which focuses on a variety of blood collection methods, will be offered June 4 to Aug. 8. Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Clinicals are completed at UTMB Health. Cost of the course is $999.

Kids College Cover

Registration underway for 2018 Kids’ College

Registration is underway for the 2018 Kids’ College summer program for students ages 10 and older at Galveston College.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses this summer include two programs: Advanced Robotics and Virtual Reality Design. There also will be a return of the ever-popular classes in 3D Video Game Design, Minecraft Designers, Minecraft Animators and Advanced 3D Video Game Design. These courses are a great introduction to coding and programing.

Additional offerings include Cupcake Crazies, BLAST Babysitting Basics, Junior Chef and Improvisational Theatre.
