2021 Galveston College Island Invitational Baseball Tournament

The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team will host its 2021 Galveston College Island Invitational baseball tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6, beginning at 10 a.m. each day at Bernard Davis Stadium at 81st Street and Frank Giusti Drive in Galveston. On Friday, the Whitecaps will take on Western Texas College at 4 p.m. and Blinn College at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Whitecaps will play Temple College at 3 p.m. and Alvin Community College at 7 p.m.

Coach Kevin Lallmann invites everyone out to Bernard Davis Stadium to watch the teams in action. Admission for the baseball tournament is $5 each day.

Galveston College Coach Kyle Giusti named to Abilene Christian Baseball All-Decade Team

Galveston College Assistant Baseball Coach Kyle Giusti has been named to the Abilene Christian University Baseball All-Decade Team.

As a third baseman, Coach Giusti played in the final Division II year for ACU in 2013 and was named to the All-Lone Star Conference First Team. He also played in ACU’s first year as a Division I school.

Coach Giusti hit .346 in two seasons, including a team-high .358 average in 2013. He drove in 59 runs in two years, including 40 as a junior. He also recorded a .931 fielding percentage at third base.

Twenty-eight of ACU’s best players from the past decade (2010-2019) were nominated for this prestigious group. Fans voted online to decide the top eight position players, including three position-less outfielders, designated hitter, utility player, the top two starting pitchers and top two relief pitchers to complete a 14-player All-Decade Team.

Coach Giusti is the son of Donna and Joe Giusti, Galveston County Precinct 2 County Commissioner. He is a graduate of Santa Fe High School and played two years for the Galveston College Whitecaps, where he was named 2012 Texas/New Mexico JUCO all-star, as well as all-conference and region as a sophomore.

Whitecaps Baseball: Turn Back the Clock Day

Galveston College Whitecaps baseball will celebrate the 25th anniversary of winning the 1994 Junior College World Series at “Turn Back the Clock Day” on Thursday, April 25, at 4 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive, Galveston.

The Whitecaps will wear their throwback uniforms as they take on the San Jacinto Gators in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. There will be bounce houses for the kids, free popcorn, music and fun!

The games are free and open to the public.

Feb. 8-9: Whitecaps Baseball vs. North Central Texas College

The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team will take on the North Central Texas College Lions in a three-game series Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at Bernard Davis Field in Galveston, Texas. Game times at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association will provide free hot dogs, chips and drinks while they last for the Friday game.

Galveston College Whitecaps softball hosts Island Invitational tournament

The Galveston College Whitecaps softball team hosted the 2019 Galveston College Island Invitational Jan. 25-26 at the Lassie League Complex, 2506 83rd St., Galveston, Texas.

The Whitecaps took on Northwest Florida State College in the first round of the tournament, which featured teams from throughout Texas and the southern U.S. After a late score, Northwest Florida State defeated the Whitecaps, 14-9.

The Whitecaps also fell to Chipola College of Marianna, Florida, 14-2, in round two; the University of Houston-Victoria, 7-3, in round three; and Snead State Community College of Boaz, Alabama, 9-6, after late scoring in the final round.

Teams in the round-robin tournament also included Alvin Community College; Blinn College, Brenham; Lake Land College, Mattoon, Illinois; Louisiana State University Eunice; Navarro College, Corsicana; San Jacinto College, Pasadena; and Temple College.

The Whitecaps softball team will make an appearance at the Cowtown Classic Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2, at Gateway Park in Fort Worth. On Friday, the Whitecaps will take on Weatherford College at 3 p.m. and North Central Texas College at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Whitecaps will play Crowley College at 9 a.m., Allen Community College at 11 a.m. and Northern Oklahoma College at 3 p.m. For more photos from the Island Invitational, click here.

Whitecaps Honor Andre Derouen, Jr. in opening day ceremony

The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team honored former player Andre Derouen Jr. in a ceremony Friday, Jan. 25, at Bernard Davis Field before winning the season opening game against Temple College by a score of 5-3.

Andre, who was a freshman outfielder on the Whitecaps roster, drowned in March 2018 while rescuing his younger brother from a neighborhood pond not far from their League City home.

Many family members, friends and teammates were in attendance, including Andre’s parents, Andre, Sr. and LaTashia Derouen, and brother, Desmond Derouen.

Long-time Houston Astros announcer and Galveston native Bob Ford emceed the day’s events.

During the ceremony, Galveston College paid its respects to Andre by retiring his No. 1 jersey. The jersey will be displayed, along with a special plaque presented by the Galveston Kiwanis Club, on the right field wall.

Andre was a standout baseball and football player at Hitchcock High School before playing for the Whitecaps.

In Friday’s second game, Temple split the series by a score of 15-4.

The Whitecaps (1-1) travel to Justin, Texas, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2, to take on Seward County Community College of Liberal, Kansas, at Northwest High School. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday. For more opening day photos, click here.
