Galveston College recently named Randy Graves as student life coordinator, a position that oversees residence life and student housing, including the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Student Residences, the Whitecaps Apartments and a number of houses in the vicinity of the main campus that house Galveston College students.
In his role at the college, Graves is also responsible for student activities and serves as adviser to the Galveston College Student Government Association.
For the past five years, Graves served as vice president for student affairs and athletic director at Carl Albert State College, a two-year college in Poteau, Oklahoma. Previously, he served two years as associate vice president for student life at Carl Albert.
While at Carl Albert, Graves established the second National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) community college men’s wrestling program in Oklahoma, the first NJCAA cross country program in Oklahoma and the first NJCAA Esports program in Oklahoma. He also coordinated athletic renovations, including the installation of a new baseball backstop, scoreboard, press box and softball entry; coordinated renovations at the Stivers Center recreation complex, including cardio, weight room, racquetball and outdoor recreation equipment; established an Esports Arena; and assisted in establishing VikingTV live broadcasts for athletics and special events.
Prior to his time at Carl Albert, he worked at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, for 15 years, serving most recently as director of student life and Department of Veterans Affairs certifying official. He also worked at the Boys and Girls Club of America in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
Graves has a Master of Science in Human Resource Development from the University of Texas at Tyler, a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and an Associate of Science from Carl Albert State College.
“Mr. Graves brings a wealth of experience to the college, and we are excited to welcome him as an integral part of our Student Services team,” said Ron Crumedy, associate vice president for student services. “He is off to a great start with seating our Student Government Association as well as developing several student engagement opportunities for the campus.”
Graves said, “I am very appreciative to the Galveston College administration for this opportunity and all the faculty and staff who have been helpful in my journey back to Texas. My goal as student life coordinator is to provide educational activity experiences that will complement the academic program of studies. Hopefully, housing students will embrace their new home and develop a respect for suitemates, and all students will engage in organizational leadership, campus and community service opportunities, explore Galveston Island, and participate in additional student activities, intramurals and supporting the Whitecaps athletic programs.”
