Whitecaps Wardrobe appointments available

Are you looking for clothes for work or a job interview?

The Galveston College Student Government Association is accepting appointments to shop its new Whitecaps Wardrobe professional clothing closet. The closet is located on the second floor of the Hermes Fitness Center.

A variety of free business and business casual attire is available, including dress shirts and slacks, jackets, dresses, pants, blouses and career-specific attire.

To schedule a confidential appointment, please contact Jose Martinez at jmartinez@gc.edu to arrange a date and time.

Donations also may be dropped off near the screening stations in the Moody Hall lobby and the Mary Moody Northen Center atrium and at the Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center.

Whitecaps Wardrobe is made possible thanks to generous donations from faculty, staff, students and friends of Galveston College.

SGA Hosts Virtual Escape Room

The Galveston College Student Government Association and Office of Student Life will host a Breakout Games Virtual Escape Room on Wednesday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. Gamers direct their gamemaster (a real person in a real escape room) to explore, and the gamers solve the clues. SGA Halloween Decorating Contest Deadline to Enter

The Galveston College Student Government Association is hosting a Halloween-themed decorating contest during the month of October.

To participate, students, faculty and staff should submit a photo of their door or lawn decorations to Jose Martinez, student life coordinator, at jmartinez@gc.edu. Winners will be selected through a vote by students, faculty and staff. A valid Galveston College ID will be required to submit a vote. The three categories include off off-campus resident, Student Housing, and faculty and staff.

Off-campus residents may submit a photo of lawn decorations and address to verify location. Submit entries to jmartinez@gc.edu.

Student Housing may submit photo of door decorations and may enter alone or with room/suitemate. Submit entries to jmartinez@gc.edu.

Faculty and staff should submit departmental/office entries to jmartinez@gc.edu..

Entries will be given an ID number. Public voting via a form will determine the winners. Deadline to submit an entry is Oct. 28 at 11:59 p.m. Voting will occur Oct. 29 to Oct. 31. Winner will be announced Nov. 2.

Prizes include a $40 gift card for the off-campus resident and Student Housing resident, which may be split into two $20 gift cards for roommates.

Galveston College sets Week of Welcome

The Galveston College Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association have planned a Week of Welcome (WOW) from Aug. 26 to 29 in celebration of the beginning of the fall 2019 semester.

On Monday, Aug. 26, join the Student Government Association for free breakfast and beverages from 7:30-10 a.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students will receive their official free Galveston College planner and will have an opportunity to meet the 2019-2020 SGA officers.

Later that day, there will be a Mix and Mingle with the SGA from 5-7 p.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students are invited to enjoy free snacks and beverages, to play board games, to network, to pick up a free copy of the Galveston College planner and to meet the SGA officers.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, join the Student Government Association for free breakfast and beverages from 7:30-10 a.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students will receive their official free Galveston College planner and will have an opportunity to meet the 2019-2020 SGA officers.

Also on Tuesday, there will be a Mix and Mingle with the SGA from 5-7 p.m. in the lobby of Moody Hall. Students are invited to enjoy free snacks and beverages, to play board games, to network, to pick up a free copy of the Galveston College planner and to meet the SGA officers.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, there will be a blood drive hosted by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing – West.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, there will be a Game Truck Video Game Party from 3-5 p.m. in the parking area at Avenue Q 1/2 and 39th Street. The game truck is loaded with video consoles and a massive library of video games.

The Fall 2019 Involvement Fair is set for Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mary Moody Northen Center Atrium. Student organizations, departments, programs and community organizations will host informational tables. Come to learn more about the many ways to get involved at Galveston College. Free pizza will be served.

SGA celebrates induction ceremony

The Galveston College Student Government Association celebrated its incoming and outgoing officers at an induction ceremony April 11 in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing.

David Gage was inducted 2019-2020 president. Also recognized were incoming officers Stephanie Sagastume, vice president; Graciela Salinas, secretary; Ivan Escalante, treasurer; and Shona Gastian, historian.

Outgoing officers recognized during the evening were Ivan Escalante, president; McKenzie Holmes, vice president; Maura Williams, treasurer; and Maurissa Pena, historian.

President Escalante noted a number of SGA accomplishments during the 2018-2019 academic year, including:

  • the establishment of the Food for Thought mobile farmers market;
  • attending Community College Day at the Texas State Capitol;
  • monthly presentations at the Galveston Community College District Board of Regents meetings;
  • participation in two Mardi Gras parades; and
  • attending the Sam Houston State University Diversity Leadership Conference with other student organization leaders.

The students recognized a number of individuals, including Cynthia Parra, Student Activities coordinator and SGA adviser; Ron Crumedy, associate vice president for student services; Priselda Perez, director of Upward Bound; Rosie Rios, Upward Bound academic coordinator; Gabriela Zepeda, Upward Bound administrative assistant; Trish Szymanski, digital communications and web services manager; Sandi Smith, graphics specialist; and Carol Langston, director of public affairs and SGA co-adviser.
