“Progressing During Difficulty” Student Success Seminar

Galveston College Technical and Professional Education will kick off its spring Student Success Seminars series on Thursday, March 4, at 9 a.m. with a presentation titled “Progressing During Difficulty” featuring Mae Francis of Lookin’ Up Consulting.
The seminar is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and the general public. The Zoom link to the seminar is as follows:
The seminar will focus on three ideas to help students and other participants progress in troubled times:
1) Mindset about difficulty,
2) Making room for resilience and
3) Building a personal mission statement.
Francis, known best for inspiring and transferring positivity to whomever she comes in contact with, is currently the president and owner of Lookin’ Up Consulting, a training and development company that builds interactive programs, speeches and mentorships that educate and inspire professionals, as well as programs that support the emotional and social development of youth.
With more than 25 years in the field of teaching and training, Francis believes that her purpose on earth is to enhance the lives of others. She spent 19 years in the chemical industry, including five years selling plasticizers for Sterling Chemicals and 14 years as the training and development leader for Ashland Chemicals.
Francis has been certified as a trainer and coach by the Association of Training and Development and is a United States Army veteran. She studied Bible and Theology, as well as Business Administration, at St. Leo University and College of the Mainland.
Francis is an active member of the Texas City/La Marque, League City and Galveston chambers of commerce, the Association for Talent Development, and the advisory board for the College of the Mainland Petrochemical Process Technology program. She also is an active big sister for Gulf Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is the mother of one, Whitnie, and is married to Merlin.

Galveston College students to hear from workforce development leader

“Build Your Future” will be the theme of a student success seminar featuring workforce development authority Carla Thompson on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing at Galveston College.

Backed by solid credentials and proficiencies in hiring, training and retention of workforce, Thompson brings strong knowledge of communication, construction and craft needs for industry to the Houston-Galveston region.

Her presentation will focus on career opportunities, craft professions, training programs and steps to finding a career in industrial construction.

Thompson is a workforce development manager – Western Region for Turner Industries Group, LLC. She developed her administrative skill set through experience as a workforce development manager, craft training manager, office manager and educational specialist.

Her experience includes power, nuclear, industrial maintenance and industrial construction. In 2009, she earned credentials as a National Center for Construction Education and Research master trainer and NCCER administrator. Her major strengths include administration for NCCER programs, setup of craft training and apprenticeship programs, and collaborating with area businesses and schools.

Thompson is currently the chairperson of the East Harris County Manufacturers Association Craft Training Sub-Committee. She is also involved in workforce development as member of the Gulf Coast Associated Builders and Contractors High School Committee, a previous chair and member of the Associated Builders and Contractors/Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation Craft Training Committee, a member of ABC/CMEF Youth Committee and the ABC Industrial Committee. She has also held an executive position for the State of Virginia on the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board.

Feb. 7: Study Smarter Not Harder Success Seminar

On Thursday, Feb. 7, from 4-5 p.m. in the Seibel Wing-West, Elvia Bytautas, developmental education and student success advisor, will help students learn about the steps of the study cycle and discover how to engage in meaningful, active learning to achieve the results they want in class. Free and open to students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served.

Success Seminar: Financial Aid 101

The Student Activities office at Galveston College will present “Financial Aid 101” on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 4-5 p.m. in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing at Galveston College, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas.

Presenter will be Tyese Dunn, Galveston College financial aid coordinator.

“Participants of this workshop will learn the basics about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the financial aid awarding process and timeline, and the effect of scholarships and other outside assistance on financial aid funding,” said Cynthia Parra, coordinator of Student Activities at Galveston College.
