Galveston College to close at noon Monday through Tuesday

Tropical Storm Nicholas is moving closer to the Texas Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall this evening between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay.

In the interest of the safety of students, faculty and staff, Galveston College will be closed and classes will be canceled from 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, through Tuesday, Sept. 14.

A shelter-in-place notification is in effect for all on-campus students. On-campus food services will remain open with modified operations.

Students, faculty and staff should closely monitor Galveston College alerts, Whitecaps email, campus social media and the Galveston College website for continued updates in the coming days.

Decisions impacting campus operations, including facilities, classes, remote expectations, etc., will be communicated on a regular basis.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rainfall (as much as 15-20 inches) caused by the system, and the region is under a flash flood watch until at least Tuesday evening.

The city of Galveston also anticipates higher than normal tides, which could cause coastal flooding. The weather service predicts two to four feet of storm surge for the Galveston area and gusty winds.

Scattered power and communication outages are anticipated.

In the event of street flooding, please avoid driving through standing water.
