Although the NJCAA DI Region 14 South Conference season is still young, a clash between Galveston College and San Jacinto College was inevitable as the Whitecaps host the Ravens in a doubleheader at 2 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at Bernard Davis Field.
The series between the South Conference rivals promises high-stakes action, with both ballclubs poised for an intense battle on the diamond.
GC is 18-13 overall and in fourth place with a 6-6 record in conference, while SJC is 17-12 overall and tied for first place with Blinn College with a 9-3 mark.
“It’s going to be a tough series against San Jacinto,” said Whitecaps Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “The Ravens are a talented team and are always very competitive. We have a young team that is getting better game by game and we have our work cut out for us. This will be a good experience for our team.”
After winning seven of eight games at the beginning of the month, the Whitecaps find themselves in a small slump, having dropped their last five games. GC’s most recent losses came against the same SJC squad early in the week, 7-4 and 12-5, on March 19 and 20.
The Whitecaps are looking to change their course when they have the home-field advantage and the support of the home crowd this weekend. GC is 12-5 in the confines of Bernard Davis Field.
Pitching will also play a key role for GC against SJC. Whitecaps hurlers have a 3.85 ERA against their opponents this season.
After the series against SJC, the Whitecaps will host Wharton County Junior College at 6 p.m. on March 27 at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
