The Houston Astros on Wednesday, Sept. 5, honored Galveston College Whitecaps baseball player Andre Derouen, Jr., who drowned in March after rescuing his younger brother from a pond near their home.

Andre was a fantastic and beloved athlete, having played both football and baseball for Hitchcock High School. He was also named Hitchcock ISD’s most valuable defensive baseball player his senior year in 2017.

“Andre brought so much joy to everyone around him,” said Chris Joblin, head coach of the Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team. “He is missed by everyone who knew him.”

Several dozen family members, friends and teammates were at the event to celebrate and honor Andre.  All of them wore custom-made T-shirts featuring Andre in his Whitecaps uniform and the Houston Astros’ classic orange star.
