Galveston College left fielder Zachary Daigre and center fielder Kyeler Thompson scored in the bottom of the eighth to give the Whitecaps a 3-1, come-from-behind victory over San Jacinto College-North on Thursday at Bernard Davis Field. 

GC’s win over SJCN, the Whitecaps second in a row, improved their record to 28-20 on the season overall and 16-13 in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 South Conference. The loss dropped the Ravens to 30-17 and 22-7. 

“It was a good game by both teams and I’m proud of how our players stayed concentrated and were able to rally in the eighth to get us the win,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “Zachary Fetchel pitched very well to keep us in the ball game and Kade Foulke pitched two solid innings to shut the door and seal the win for us.”  

With six games remaining in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 regular season, GC is in third place behind SJCN and first-place Blinn College (31-14, 23-6). The Whitecaps are two games ahead of Wharton County Junior College (21-21, 14-15) and have an outside chance of finishing as high as second place, but can solidify a third-place finish in the next few games. 

“We have half a dozen games left to play in the regular season and we need to play solid, fundamental baseball to keep pace and qualify for the regional tournament,” said Reinke. “We have a young team and they have kept on learning and improving over the season to get us this far. Now, they have to finish the job.” 

The Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Thursday, but the Whitecaps knotted up the game at 1-all in the following frame.  

The deadlock went on for another three innings before GC drove home Daigre and Thompson to break the tie and take a 3-1 lead, which was the eventual final score. 

Fetchel pitched a four-hitter over seven innings, allowed one run and struck out seven SJCN batters. 

Foulke added two innings of shut-out relief work, struck out three and was credited with the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. 

GC will visit SJCN on Saturday for a doubleheader at 2 and 4:30 p.m., and will return home to host Wharton County Junior College on April 29 at 6 p.m., at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
