Galveston College officials recently announced the addition of a new Emergency Medical Services Professional certificate and alternative Associate of Applied Science degree program for paramedics who are seeking to advance in their careers.
The 21 credit-hour EMS Professional certificate is designed to prepare certified paramedics for entry into management, education or supervisory positions in EMS and fire organizations.
The program is a completely online professional course plan.
EMS Professional certificate graduates can add coursework in a subsequent semester or semesters to obtain the Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services.
“This new program accomplishes a big need in the EMS profession,” said Brian Ayres, director of the Emergency Medical Services program at Galveston College. “There are many paramedics in the workforce who did not have an option to complete their AAS EMS degree. Many EMS programs throughout the state and country do not have degree options leaving these students with no ability to complete their AAS. This program solves that problem and provides the education needed to qualify for advancement in promotional opportunities.”
In this program, not only are paramedics able to achieve their AAS degree, but also obtain certifications in Critical Care, EMS Instructor, Supervision/Management, EMS Safety and Disaster Response.
“The EMS profession needs more leaders, and the Galveston College EMS program now has a program in place to educate and develop future leaders for the EMS profession,” Ayres said.
