The Galveston Independent School District’s Hispanic Heritage Month Extravaganza, co-hosted by Galveston College, brought vibrant colors, sounds and flavors to life on Sept. 16, 2024.

The celebration, held at the Galveston College main campus, honored the rich cultural Hispanic heritage with a diverse range of activities for the community. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationally from Sept. 15-Oct. 15.

The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya, an immigrant from Honduras who overcame immense challenges to earn his Ph.D. in education.

The Extravaganza was a feast for the senses with festivities that included lively performances from Ballet Folklórico dancers representing several Galveston ISD schools. Dressed in traditional, brightly colored costumes, the elementary and middle-school students mesmerized the crowd with their energetic movements that showcased the Mexican folk dancing.

Adding to the celebration, booths offering cultural cuisine from various Hispanic countries allowed attendees to sample a variety of dishes, giving everyone a taste of Hispanic culinary diversity.

During the event, families enjoyed music, dance, and food while participating in giveaways that included Galveston College T-shirts, coloring pages, crayons, educational materials, and other fun items.
