The Mary Moody Northen Endowment recently awarded a generous grant of $300,000 to the Galveston College Foundation in support of the new Health Sciences Education Center at Galveston College.
“We are thankful for the Mary Moody Northen Endowment’s support of Building Tomorrow: The Campaign for the Health Sciences Education Center,” said Galveston College President W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D. “As we near completion of the new Health Sciences Education Center, which will house Galveston College’s Allied Health and Nursing programs, this grant represents a meaningful continuation of a longtime relationship between Galveston College and Mrs. Mary Moody Northen. This momentous investment in Galveston Island will help provide the physical space for Galveston College to educate and train the community’s workforce of today and tomorrow.”
In 1972, in recognition of a historic gift to Galveston College and Mrs. Mary Moody Northen’s significant philanthropic endeavors in the community, the Mary Moody Northen Center was named at the college’s main campus. In addition, when the Universal Access Endowment Scholarship program was created in the early 2000s, the endowment was a funder.
The growing health sciences program at Galveston College offers a wide variety of areas of study including Computed Tomography (CT), Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare Management, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Medical Administration, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy, Radiography and Surgical Technology.
Betty Massey, Executive Director of the Mary Moody Northen Endowment, said the importance of a strong health care workforce as well as the long history of the Endowment’s support of education led to the decision to direct the funds to Galveston College’s Health Sciences Education Center.
The Mary Moody Northen Endowment is a charitable foundation which awards grants to support environmental, social service, educational and historical projects benefitting people and institutions in Virginia and Texas.
