On March 9, 2022, Dr. Myles Shelton, president of Galveston College joined the Board of Regents as they recognized the contributions of long serving member, Carroll G. Sunseri. Mr. Sunseri joined the Board of Regents in 1990 and served up to the time of his passing on December 30, 2021.

 

During a brief but heartfelt ceremony, Dr. Shelton presented Mrs. Andrea Sunseri, Carolyn Sunseri and Stephanie Sunseri Doyle with a photo of Mr. Sunseri that had been on display for years in the administration office, and a copy of a resolution honoring his service to Galveston College.

 

“Mr. Sunseri was a good friend who dedicated more than 30 years of his life to helping Galveston College,” said Dr. Shelton. “His contributions were meaningful, enduring and helped bring the College to where it is today.”

 

Ms. Sunseri added that, “Carroll loved the College and being one of the trustees for all of those years. He missed being able to attend the last few months.”

 

The Resolution Honoring the Service of Regent Carroll G. Sunseri to Galveston College reads as follows:

 

WHEREAS, Regent Carroll G. Sunseri gave honorable service and shared invaluable knowledge as a member of the Board of Regents of the Galveston Community College District from May 1990 until his untimely passing on December 30, 2021; and

 

WHEREAS, Regent Sunseri served steadfastly as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary of the Board of Regents during his tenure; and

 

WHEREAS, he also served as a member of several Board of Regents committees, including Athletics (Past Chair) and most recently the Policies (Chair), Finance, and Facilities; and

 

WHEREAS, Regent Sunseri was a proud BOI and leader in the community, and he excelled at promoting the College and its programs through his enthusiastic involvement and dedication to Galveston educational endeavors and numerous charities, community boards, and humanitarian efforts, including St. Mary’s Hospital, Galveston Propeller Club, 50 Club of Galveston County, Galveston YMCA, Kiwanis, O’Connell High School Board of Trustees, and the Galveston Historical Foundation; and

 

WHEREAS, Regent Sunseri was an avid sports enthusiast of the Whitecaps softball and baseball programs and lifelong supporter of the University of Texas Longhorns; and

 

WHEREAS, Regent Sunseri and his supportive wife, Andrea, gave generously of their time and resources to Galveston College;

 

WHEREAS, he always encouraged faculty members and staff with a “you can do it” or a simple thumbs-up; and

 

WHEREAS, his guidance and valuable service will help to maintain Galveston College as a beacon of light guiding lifelong learning.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Regents of the Galveston Community College District and the Galveston College President formally express highest admiration and respect for Regent Sunseri with gratitude for his extraordinary leadership and over 31 years of service as a Regent and his dedication to Galveston College; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be entered in the permanent minutes of the Board of Regents of the Galveston Community College District and a commemorative copy be given to his wife Andrea as a token of esteem for valued service and commitment to this institution, its mission, and its students.
