Galveston College’s softball team changed course and secured wins in five of their last six games as they head into the final stretch of the regular season, beginning Saturday against Angelina College at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.
The Whitecaps will play a doubleheader against the Roadrunners today at 1 and 3:30 p.m. GC games are free and open to the public.
After a tough couple of weeks to start April, which included dropping five of six games, the No. 17-ranked Whitecaps did an about-face over the past week and went 5-1 in the last seven days. GC improved to 36-13 overall on the season and is in third place with a 14-6 record in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 South Conference.
“We hit a rough patch a few weeks ago, but the team is pulling it together and working hard in practice for this last stretch of games,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We have four games remaining, all at home, beginning with Angelina College on Saturday and closing out the regular season on Monday against San Jac-South. We’re looking to finish strong and qualify for the regional tournament.”
GC will face an Angelina College squad that is fifth-place in the South Conference with a 19-34 record overall and 9-13 in the conference.
The Whitecaps returned to form with a resounding 14-0 and 26-3 sweep of Coastal Bend College on April 20 and continued with two more wins against Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 7-3 and 15-3, on April 22 and most recently split a twin bill against Alvin Community College, winning 12-4 and dropping a heartbreaker, 3-2.
In the 12-4 rout over ACC, GC rallied from a 3-1 deficit with nine unanswered runs over the span of three innings to take a 10-3 lead in the fifth inning and added two more scores in the last inning to finish the comeback.
GC’s Jenna Johnston pitched a complete seven-inning game, allowing four runs on 10 hits, while striking out four to win her 20th game of the season.
In the second game of the twin bill against the Dolphins, the Whitecaps again found themselves down, 3-1. This time around, GC was only able to muster enough offense to score one more run in the game, being shut down by ACC’s starting pitcher, Charlie Miller, who went seven innings to claim the victory.
The Whitecaps will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against San Jacinto College-South on April 29 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston.
