College Foundation announces endowment of Vandy Anderson Scholarship Award in Culinary Arts
| The Galveston College Foundation Board of Directors has announced the creation of
the Vandy Anderson Scholarship Award in Culinary Arts endowment at Galveston College. The new scholarship will foster the development of aspiring culinary arts professionals enrolled at Galveston College. The first recipients of the Vandy Anderson Scholarship Award in Culinary Arts will be announced in spring 2021. “The Vandy I knew loved good food. You could frequently find him along with his food enthusiast friends enjoying the culinary achievements of all his favorite restaurants. This scholarship honors Vandy’s love for Galveston’s culinary gastronomic community and those that chose to take up that life’s work. The Galveston College Culinary Arts Academy scholarship means that students will be able to pursue their dreams and our local hospitality industry will have a skilled workforce,” said Jeri Kinnear, chair of the Galveston College Foundation. Ann Anderson, Vandy Anderson’s sister, said she is thrilled and grateful to everyone in the community who supported the family in establishing the endowed scholarship. “We are so honored by the establishment of this scholarship that lovingly will be named after Vandy, to whom education, history and the island were so very important,” Anderson said. “By supporting culinary student talent, this scholarship will celebrate our Vandy’s passion for life, support for education, and love of family and community – not to mention a fine meal!” Vandy Anderson passed away on April 16, 2016. He was 73. He started his radio career at KILE radio and would become the owner/manager of KGBC for more than 30 years. Broadcasters inducted him into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2014. “Vandy served his community in numerous ways as a broadcaster, trustee, chair or adviser for organizations across Galveston until his passing,” said Paulie Gaido, retired Galveston restaurateur. “The scholarship honors his legacy in the Galveston community and his love for the people of the island.” Gaido’s book, “Entertaining at Home with Fresh American Seafood and Exceptional American Wine,” which he wrote with his wife Mary Kay, helped raise funds locally to honor the much-beloved man known as the “Voice of Galveston” during his long tenure at KGBC. “On behalf of our culinary arts program and our culinary students, I want to thank all of those who made this endowment possible for their generous and thoughtful gifts,” said Dr. Myles Shelton, president of Galveston College. “This scholarship will honor Vandy’s memory and celebrate his passion for life, the joy of cooking and the importance of the culinary arts. We are grateful for and humbled by the Anderson family’s decision to honor Vandy in this way.” Currently, there are several scholarships available for those interested in the Galveston College Culinary Arts Academy. Apply now for spring 2021 graduation
Galveston College students who plan to graduate in spring 2021 can apply now in Admissions and Records by visiting their whitecaps portal at whitecaps.gc.edu.
General graduation requirements can be found in the Graduation section of the Galveston College catalog. Additional program requirements for graduation can be found under the Degree Plans and Programs of Study section of the catalog.
In addition to general course requirements, students must also meet the following requirements to be eligible to graduate from Galveston College:
- Grade-point average must be 2.00 or higher.
- At least 25 percent of certificate/degree requirements must be completed in residence at Galveston College.
In addition, any outstanding financial or other obligations to Galveston College will prevent the student from receiving a copy of his/her diploma. All students are strongly encouraged to visit with an advisor in the Counseling and Advising Center prior to applying for graduation to ensure all graduation requirements have been met. Final fall Food for Thought distribution draws 79 cars to Charlie Thomas Family ATC
The last free drive-through Food for Thought food distribution for the fall semester on Nov. 17 at Galveston College drew 79 cars to the Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center.
Food for Thought is a partnership between Galveston College, the Galveston County Food Bank and the Houston Food Bank through its Food for Change food scholarship initiative.
Over the course of the semester, the program served hundreds of Galveston College students and their families by providing them with access to fresh produce, meats and other groceries on the Galveston College campus, enabling them to save money for other necessities and to maintain their focus on school. All currently enrolled Galveston College students are eligible to participate.
A very special thanks to the volunteers from the Texas Army National Guard, Galveston College faculty, staff and students, and friends of the college who assisted in distributing the food this semester.

Early registration underway at Galveston College
Early registration for the spring 2021 semester is underway at Galveston College. Students are encouraged to register early to get the classes they need – when they need them. The spring semester begins Jan. 19.
Registration hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in the Counseling and Advising Center on the first floor of Moody Halllll. Returning students can register on their Whitecaps portal at whitecaps.gc.edu.

Students have five course-delivery options that fit their preferred learning styles and comfort levels:
- face-to-face instruction,
- hybrid synchronous (a combination of face-to-face and Zoom meetings),

- online synchronous via Zoom,
- traditional online internet instruction, or
- a combination of the options.
Not all classes are offered in all five course-delivery methods.

The updated fall 2020 schedule of classes went online July 20 and reflects necessary changes in course delivery based on the college’s Framework for Fall Classes and Campus Operations.
Students have five options that fit their preferred learning style and comfort level:
• face-to-face instruction,
• hybrid synchronous (a combination of face-to-face and Zoom meetings),
• hybrid asynchronous (a combination of face-to-face and traditional online instruction),
• online synchronous via Zoom,
• traditional online asynchronous instruction, or
• a combination of the options.
Some technical and professional programs, such as Nursing, have a prescribed course delivery system.

New and prospective students should complete the admissions application at applytexas.org and contact the Office of Admissions at [email protected] to ensure their admissions files are complete.
In order to plan coursework for the summer and fall, current and new students should contact the Counseling and Advising Office at [email protected] or their designated program advisers by email.
The online registration system is open. To register, complete the following steps:
- Log in to the Whitecaps portal by entering a Galveston College user ID and password. (Students who do not know their Galveston College ID should contact the Information Technology Service Desk at [email protected].)
- View Degree Audit.
- Select Register for Classes.
Registration is not complete until payment arrangements are made.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Students should contact the Financial Aid office at [email protected] to ensure their financial aid awards are in place. Students who have not completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should do so here.
The deadline for Galveston College scholarship applications for fall 2020 is Friday, May 1. Please click here to complete the application. Email the application to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on May 1.

Students owing a balance can make full payments online with a credit card via their student portal or by sending a check or money order by mail to the Galveston College Business Office, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, TX 77550.
