Galveston College celebrated its 59th anniversary of serving to the community and Rip Tide’s first birthday during Whitecaps Day held on Sept. 17 in the atrium at the college’s main campus.
GC opened its doors to the public on Sept. 18, 1967. Coincidentally, Sept. 18 is also Rip Tide’s birthday, making the annual celebration a double occasion for the college community.
The festivities featured food, music, GC and Rip Tide T-shirts and commemorative buttons, cake and a birthday sing-along featuring an appearance by Rip Tide.
GC Culinary Arts students served up the popular “Rip Dogs,” bacon-wrapped hotdogs piled high with an assortment of condiments, and created the Whitecaps Day and Rip Tide birthday cakes.
Students, faculty, staff and community members also had an opportunity to test their surfing skills on the Surf Rider and cool off on the water slide.
The college’s Student Activities Department and Student Government Association also sponsored the event.
