After a dominant 12-5 series-opening win on Tuesday over San Jacinto College-North, Galveston College dropped the second game on Thursday, 7-4, against the Ravens and looks to bounce back in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 and 4:30 p.m. at San Jac.

“We have a good rivalry with San Jac and we played a gritty game on Tuesday. Our team really came through with some big offense in the seventh to break it wide open and get us the win,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Ryne Edmondson. “We played it close in the second game, but they stayed ahead of us and we didn’t get the job done. We’ve put those games behind us and are focused on Saturday’s doubleheader, where we look to bring home a pair of wins.”

With the split this week, the Whitecaps slipped to fourth place, behind the third-place Ravens (14-12, 7-5), with a 14-13 overall record and 7-5 in the Region 14 South Conference.

In Tuesday’s game, GC built a 2-0 lead in the first two innings of play. SCJC knotted it at 2-all in the third and took a temporary 3-2 advantage in the fourth frame.

The Whitecaps battled back with two runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 4-3, but the Ravens responded with a pair of tallies in the sixth to reclaim the advantage, 5-4.

The turning point came in the seventh when GC’s offense exploded for eight unanswered runs to take a 12-5 lead they never relinquished and cruised the rest of the way to victory.

Whitecaps freshman right-handed reliever pitched three middle innings of relief, allowed only two runs on a pair of hits and struck out five Ravens hitters to notch his first win of the season and level out his record at 1-1.

Ravens reliever Mack Mabrey was credited with the loss and dropped to 2-2. Mabrey allowed six runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning and struck out one GC batter.

Offensively for the Whitecaps, freshman designated hitter Trenton Buckley went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, and sophomore first baseman Saul Soto went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. GC freshman infielder Maddox Medrano went 1-for-2 and drove in three runs.

In Thursday’s game two matchup, SJCN built a 4-2 lead over the home team in the second inning. After four straight scoreless innings, the Ravens broke the drought with three runs in the seventh frame to increase their lead, 7-2. The Whitecaps rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was a little too late and fell, 7-4.
