Galveston College pitchers Jenna Johnston and Brynn Glidewell led the Whitecaps to a doubleheader sweep of Blinn College, 8-1 and 7-6, on Saturday at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.
Johnston hurled a five-hitter in seven innings of work, allowed only one run and struck out four Bucs hitters in GC’s 8-1 first-game victory. With the win, Johnston improved her record to 9-3 on the year.
In the second game, Glidewell pitched six innings, allowed six runs on a dozen hits and struck out three. Johnston came back to pitch one inning of relief and struck out a pair of opposing batters to claim her second save of the year. Glidewell earned the victory and improved her season mark to 3-2.
With the sweep, GC has won five of its last six games and sits atop the Region 14 South Conference with a 16-8 overall record, 5-1 in conference play.
“The team has continued to improve and the second game was a good test of our resilience,” said Whitecaps Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We were down by two runs going into the bottom of the fifth and we came back to win the game. The experience gained in games like this one will help us down the stretch as the season will only get more competitive.”
In the nightcap, the Bucs ran up a two-run, 5-3 lead before the Whitecaps’ bats came alive with a four-run fifth inning to take a 7-5 advantage. BC got a run back in the seventh, but were stopped from scoring again by Johnston.
GC will visit Coastal Bend College on Wednesday in a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. The Whitecaps return home for a twin bill on Saturday against Alvin Community College at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex in Galv
