Coastal Bend College never stood a chance as Galveston College came out swinging Saturday, snapping a three-game losing streak with an overwhelming doubleheader sweep of the Cougars at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.

The Whitecaps piled up 29 runs in two games to convincingly defeat the Cougars 21-1 and 8-0 to get back on the winning track.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Whitecaps improved to 25-11 overall and remain in first place in the Region 14 South Conference by percentage points and with a 14-4 record. GC is trailed in the standings by Blinn College (19-21, 15-5), which is only .028 percentage points behind the conference-leading Whitecaps.

In the first game, GC opened with a run in the first inning, added five in the second, exploded for 10 runs in the third frame and closed out the scoring and the 21-1 rout with five runs in the fourth inning.

Whitecaps sophomore pitcher Jenna Johnston tossed a five-inning one-hitter and struck out seven opposing batters to win the game and improve her season record to 14-5.

GC right fielder Halle Cordova went 3-for-3 with one run scored and six RBIs, and shortstop Alayna Davis went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Adding to the Whitecaps’ offensive output was designated player Paeden Vincik, who went 3-for-4, scored a pair of runs and drove in another three, while first baseman Riley Riordan went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

In the nightcap, GC sophomore hurler Brynn Glidewell threw a two-hit shutout in five innings to notch her seventh win of the season and improve to 7-3.

The Whitecaps started with a slim 1-0 first-inning lead, drove in four runs in the second to increase their advantage to 5-0, and added three more in the third frame to close out the scoring and secure an 8-0 victory in five frames.

GC shortstop Davis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Whitecaps catcher Vincik went 1-for-3 with a solo home run.

At the time of publication, the Whitecaps were playing a doubleheader against Lamar State College-Port Arthur, which was rescheduled from April 5.

GC's next home game will be its last of the regular season as the Whitecaps host Angelina College on April 23 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
