The Galveston College Foundation announces the establishment of the Steven H. Stubbs
Endowed Scholarship, honoring the life, leadership and lasting contributions of Steven
Howard Stubbs, a former member and chairman of the Galveston College Board of Regents
whose service helped shape the college and strengthen educational access for the Galveston
community.
Stubbs, who passed away in 2025, served on the GC Board of Regents beginning in 1982
and was elected chairman from 1986 to 1990. During his tenure, he was a steadfast
advocate for student opportunity, fiscal responsibility and the belief that access
to higher education is essential to the betterment of individuals and the community
as a whole.
An endowed scholarship has been established by the Stubbs family through the Galveston
College Foundation to ensure that Stubbs’ commitment to service and education continues
for generations to come. The family invites friends, colleagues, alumni and community
members to contribute to the scholarship as a way of remembering and honoring his
legacy.
“Steven Stubbs believed deeply in education as a pathway to opportunity,” said GC
Board of Regents Chairperson, Carolyn Sunseri. “His leadership and service helped
strengthen Galveston College during a pivotal time in its history, and this endowed
scholarship reflects his lifelong dedication to learning, service and community.”
A native of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Stubbs built a life defined by leadership,
scholarship and service. He earned degrees in banking, finance, and financial accounting
from The University of Mississippi and Loyola University of the South. His distinguished
professional life included senior executive roles in investment management and finance,
including serving as president and CEO of multiple organizations.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Stubbs served his country as a member
of the Mississippi National Guard and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff
Sergeant. His dedication to civic service was equally extensive, including board service
with educational, healthcare, historical and business organizations in both Galveston
and his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Stubbs was also a respected historian and author, known for his meticulous research
and passion for preserving history. His published works reflect a lifelong commitment
to honoring service, sacrifice and community heritage.
The Steven H. Stubbs Endowed Scholarship will support GC students and reflect Stubbs’
belief in equal access to education as a cornerstone of community progress. Endowed
scholarships provide permanent support, allowing future generations of students to
benefit from a legacy of generosity and leadership.
Contributions to the Steven H. Stubbs Endowed Scholarship may be made through the
Galveston College Foundation. Gifts of any size are welcomed and will help continue
Stubbs’ enduring commitment to education, service and opportunity.
