Like the past two seasons, it will all come down to the last series of the season to decide the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Region 14 South Conference champion after Galveston College split Wednesday’s doubleheader against Alvin Community College.

The Whitecaps took the first game against the Dolphins, 3-0, but were shut down by the home team, 6-0, in the nightcap.

GC’s twin bill split, coupled with Blinn College’s sweep of Coastal Bend College on Tuesday, left the Whitecaps and Buccaneers tied for first place with identical 17-5 conference records.

The battle for the South Conference championship will take place on two different fields on April 23. GC will host sixth-place Angelina College (8-12 in conference, 15-33 overall) at 1 and 3:30 p.m., while BC will visit third-place San Jacinto College-South (9-9, 22-26) at 3 and 5:30 p.m.

In the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, the Whitecaps mustered just enough offense and solid pitching to shut out the Dolphins, 3-0. GC scored twice in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth frame.

In the pitching circle, GC sophomore hurler Jenna Johnston tossed a five-hitter and struck out three batters to claim the victory and improve her record to 16-5.

The second game was the opposite. The Whitecaps’ offense was dormant and their pitching slipped. ACC scored in each of the first two innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead, then added two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to increase its advantage to 6-0.

GC’s starting pitcher, Brynn Glidewell, was tagged for the six runs in 4.1 innings before giving way to freshman reliever Ella Lowe. Glidewell allowed 10 hits, walked two batters and was given the loss to drop her season mark to 8-4. Lowe worked 1.2 innings of relieve and only allowed one hit.

At the time of publication, the Whitecaps were playing a doubleheader against Lamar State College-Port Arthur, which was rescheduled from April 5.

GC's season finale on April 23 will be played at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
