Despite playing on the road, Galveston College earned a split of Saturday’s doubleheader at Coastal Bend College and took the series from the Cougars, two games to one.
The Whitecaps trounced the Coogs, 13-5, on April 10 in Galveston and followed up their offensive performance with a 15-4 batting clinic in the first game of Saturday’s twin bill. GC dropped the night cap, 6-1.
With the series victory over CBC, GC has won seven of its last 10 games and improved to 21-19 overall to remain in third place in the Region 14 South Conference with a 13-11 record. The Whitecaps follow first-place Blinn College (31-10, 19-5) and second-place San Jacinto College-North (31-10, 17-7) in the standings.
“Our offense has really come alive the past few weeks, and our pitching has been solid,” said Whitecaps Head Baseball Coach, Ryne Edmondson. “We’re in the home stretch of the regular season and there are not too many games remaining. Every game counts and we want to qualify to the regional tournament.”
GC has 11 games left in the regular season. The Whitecaps will play a four-game series against conference-leading Blinn College April 15-18, and a three-game set against second-place San Jacinto College-North April 24-26. The Whitecaps will conclude the regular season with a four-game series against Wharton County Junior College April 28-May 2.
With the series loss, CBC sank further in the conference standings and is in last place with a 3-21 record, 9-33 overall.
In Saturday’s overwhelming victory, the visiting Whitecaps scored a run in each of the first two innings before the flood gates opened with GC’s seven-run fourth inning, which put them in the driver's seat with a 9-0 lead.
The Whitecaps added one more run in the fifth inning to make it a 10-2 game and closed out the offensive onslaught with a five-run ninth to win the contest, 15-4.
GC left-handed pitcher Bennett Springer tossed seven innings of seven-hit ball and allowed four runs while striking out nine CBC batters. Springer was awarded the victory and improved his record to 5-3 on the year.
Galveston native and Whitecaps center fielder Seth Williams went 3-for-6, scored two runs and drove in three more, while catcher Ethan Hughes went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
GC will be back in action on Tuesday when it opens a four-game series against BC at 6 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
The second game of the series against the Buccaneers will revert to BC’s home field in Brenham on April 16 at 6 p.m. before returning to Galveston for a doubleheader on April 18 at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
