Galveston College broke ground Wednesday, June 12, for the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Student Residences, which include seven units designed to resemble the historical homes of Galveston. Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, the Seibels were honored and remembered at a summer luncheon featuring family member Jean Rosenbaum.

The project is funded in large part with the generous support of the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation.

“This is the second significant capital expansion grant from the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation to Galveston College,” said Dr. Myles Shelton, college president. “Fewer than10 years ago, Galveston College was given the means to build the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing allowing students and the community to gather for events ranging from civic, collegiate and evenings of powerful educational enrichment. Now the Seibel Foundation has bestowed the financial support necessary to realize the college’s long-time dream of student housing. We are excited about bringing this project to the neighborhood and to our students.”

When completed, the buildings will house approximately 80 students. When coupled with existing housing, the college will be able to serve approximately 110 students with housing opportunities.

“I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation trustees for their generous support, which made these student residences a reality,” said Karen Flowers, chair of the Galveston Community College District Board of Regents. “The Seibel Foundation’s lead gift on this project is a complete game-changer not only financially, but also in what it means for us going forward. It is truly transformational, and we look forward to celebrating the legacy of the Seibels with a grand opening event in 2020.”

Sullivan Brothers Builders of Galveston is construction manager for the project. Creole Design LLC of Houston is architect.
