Galveston College celebrated its 52nd Commencement Ceremony Friday, May 17, at the Galveston Island Convention Center with a record number of graduates earning a record number of degrees and certificates.
The college had a graduating class of 642 this year, compared to 566 in 2018, with 744 degrees and certificates awarded, compared to 652 in 2018.
Dr. W. Myles Shelton, Galveston College president, and Karen Flowers, chair of the Galveston Community College District Board of Regents, challenged the graduates to pursue their dreams and to give back to their community and future students.
Speakers included graduating students Olha Few and Kelly Simmons.
Theron Waddell, president of the Faculty Senate, certified the graduates and Dr. Cissy Matthews, vice president of instruction, introduced the candidates for degrees and certificates.
Music was provided by the Galveston College Community Chorale Men’s Ensemble and TMH Company, Theresa Hanebury, conductor.
Earlier in the day, the Galveston College Nursing program celebrated its 2019 Pinning Ceremony for Associate Degree in Nursing and Vocational Nursing graduates.
