Galveston College is mourning the untimely death of student Andre Derouen Jr., a member of the Whitecaps baseball team from League City, Texas.
Andre drowned Friday evening after swimming out to rescue his younger brother who had become trapped in a neighborhood pond.
Andre successfully rescued his brother before he went under water and did not surface.
A 2017 graduate of Hitchcock High School, Andre played both baseball and football. He was recognized as the district’s most valuable defensive player in baseball his senior year.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family, friends and the Whitecaps community as we grieve his tragic passing,” said Dr. Myles Shelton, president of Galveston College.
“Andre brought so much joy to everyone around him,” said Chris Joblin, head coach of the Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team. “He will be missed by everyone who knew him.”
Support is available for those at Galveston College who are grieving Andre’s loss through Counseling Services on the first floor of Moody Hall or (409) 944-1220.
There will be a celebration of Andre’s life on Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in Hitchcock, Texas. Viewing is set from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Hayes Grace Memorial Park.
