Galveston College freshman ace pitcher Jenna Johnston tossed a one-hit shutout and the Whitecaps defeated Tyler Junior College 3-0 on Saturday to advance to the second round of the NJCAA Division I Region 14 Tournament.
GC faced Paris Junior College on Monday in the second round of the regional tournament, but the game had not been completed at press time. The second round of the regional competition was rained out on Sunday and rescheduled for Monday.
“Jenna Johnston pitched an amazing game against a talented and competitive team,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “Tyler Junior College played a great game against us and we needed Jenna to pitch as well as she did because it was a close game. We’re taking it one game at a time and we’re looking forward to the next round against Paris Junior College.”
PJC was the second-place team in the Region 14 North Conference with a 43-10 overall record and 19-5 in the conference. The Dragons are the No. 2-seeded team from the North Conference.
In Saturday’s first-round matchup against Apaches, the Whitecaps scored one run in the second inning and two more in the fifth to advance to the next round with a 3-0 win over TJC.
Johnston pitched seven innings and struck out six Apaches to improve to 23-6 on the season.
GC designated player Karlie Barba went 2-for-3 with a home run, one run scored and a pair of RBIs, while first baseman Tallulah Civoniceva went 1-for-3 with a solo round-tripper.
