In a thrilling turn of events, visiting Galveston College surged past Alvin Community College with a decisive 14-2 victory, erasing an early one-run deficit, in a game that marked the beginning of conference play.

With the 12-run victory, the Whitecaps are 1-0 in conference competition and improved to 12-7 overall on the season. GC competes in the six-team South Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Region 14, which includes 13 teams overall.

“We started off the conference season on the right foot,” said Whitecaps Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “After the first inning, we settled down and got a solid and complete game from our starting pitcher, and our offense gave him a lot of run support to get the win.”

GC starter Zachary Fetchel pitched a complete seven-inning game after giving up ACC’s only two runs of the game in the opening inning. The freshman righthander struck out seven Dolphins batters an improved to 3-0.

After falling behind 2-1, the Whitecaps rallied for a five-run fourth inning and finished the game with seven unanswered runs in the seventh to win the conference opener, 14-2.

GC designated hitter Evan Aslaksen went 4-for-4 and knocked in three runs, center fielder Kyeler Thompson went 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in another three. Meanwhile, catcher Cameran Christ went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs, and shortstop Larry Drake went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.

ACC starting pitcher Seve Martinez took the loss and dropped to 3-2. Martinez gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work before getting the hook.

GC is back home this weekend and will host the same ACC squad in a doubleheader on March 2 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
