It took six innings, but Galveston College found a way to stop Alvin Community College’s comeback attempt with solid relief pitching and a couple of well-timed runs in the late innings to hold off the Dolphins, 6-4, on Thursday at Bernard Davis Field.
The Whitecaps extended their winning streak to five consecutive games with their latest victory, which includes a 14-4 away win over ACC on April 2, and improved to 24-14 overall on the season, 12-7 in the NJCAA DI Region 14 South Conference. GC is currently in third place, trailing only Blinn College (23-12, 15-4) and San Jacinto College-North (23-13, 15-4).
“We’re playing some good baseball and we need to continue what we’re doing,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “I’m proud of the team, especially since they are a young squad, and they continue to improve a game at a time.”
Whitecaps freshman righthander Dylan Vinson combined with sophomore hurler Kade Foulke to shut down the Dolphins. Foulke threw 1.1 innings in relief of starter Zachary Fetchel, allowed one hit and struck out three ACC batters. Vinson pitched two innings of relief, allowed one hit, struck out three and was credited with the victory.
“Fetchel pitched a good game, but Alvin kept coming back,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “However, they weren’t the only ones who kept coming back. Our guys were hitting and scoring at the right times, and our relievers came through for us by putting up goose eggs to help us win the game.”
GC took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but ACC answered with two runs of their own in the second to knot the game at 2-all.
The Whitecaps broke the deadlock with a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. However, two innings later, the Dolphins tied up the game for a second time, 4-4.
Finally, in the sixth inning, GC broke the tie again with a couple of scores to take a 6-4 advantage, which they didn’t relinquish and ended up being the game winners.
Whitecaps sophomore designated hitter Evan Aslaksen had a big game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. GC center fielder Kyeler Thompson went 2-for-4, scored a pair of runs and drove in another two, while right fielder Saul Soto went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
GC will pay a return visit to Alvin on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. The Whitecaps will remain on the road and visit Coastal Bend College on April 11 before returning home for a twin bill against the same CBC squad on April 13 at 2 and 5 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
