Galveston College swept San Jacinto College-South on Tuesday, 13-3 and 14-6, to claim a share of the NJCAA Division I Region 14 South Conference title and the conference’s No. 1 seed in the regional tournament, which begins on Saturday at the San Jacinto College-South Campus in Houston.
The No. 17-ranked Whitecaps finished the regular season with a 40-13 overall record and 18-6 in the South Conference. GC tied SJCS (38-22, 18-6) in the conference standings for a share of the crown. The Whitecaps also won the title in 2023.
GC’s next challenge is the Region 14 Tournament. The Whitecaps will face Tyler Junior College (33-23, 12-12) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the regional competition, which pits the top four teams in Region 14’s North and South conferences. TJC is the No. 4 seed of the North Conference.
“I’m proud of what our team has accomplished so far this season, from a Top 20 ranking to winning a co-championship and qualifying to the regional tournament with the conference’s No. 1 seed,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We had a tough month, but our players worked hard in practice and even harder on the field to turn it around and win nine of the last 10 games of the season, including the last four straight, to put us in this position.”
After dropping five of the first eight games in April, by two runs or less, the Whitecaps convincingly won nine of their last 10 games to win a co-championship and the conference’s top seed.
With a four-game winning streak to close out the regular season, GC has momentum going into Saturday’s first-round matchup against TJC in the regional tournament, which will be held at the SJC Softball Fields, located at 13735 Beamer Rd., in Houston.
