It turned out to be an early evening for Galveston College after the Whitecaps made quick work of Kilgore College on Wednesday, 17-2 and 21-1, in a doubleheader that only went five innings each at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.
With GC’s rout of the Rangers, the Whitecaps extended their winning streak to four games in a row and improved to 11-1 on the season.
“We’re off to a great start. The team is playing well together and is starting to gel,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “Our pitching has been solid and offensively, we’re been making great contact with the ball.”
During GC’s current win streak, the Whitecaps have outscored their opponents 65-5 and only allowed 12 hits.
In the first game, GC jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings before KC got on the board in the third.
Whitecaps shortstop Ella Herrewig went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs, while third baseman Breigh Houser went 1-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and brought in four runs to help lead GC’s offensive onslaught.
GC right-handed freshman pitcher Jenna Johnston went three innings and struck out four KC batters to claim the victory and improve to 6-0. Fellow freshman righty Holly Lock finished the last two innings of work for the Whitecaps.
The second game of the twin bill looked as if it might be a close one as both teams went into the home half of the second frame knotted at 1-all. That’s when the floodgates opened and the Whitecaps scored 20 unanswered runs over the next three innings, 11 in the third, to overwhelm the Rangers, 21-1.
Whitecaps third baseman Houser went 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs and designated player Emily Parks also went 3-for-3 with a homer and
three RBIs. GC pitcher Karlie Barba helped her cause by going 2-for-3 with two dingers that brought in four runs. In addition to Barba, Houser and Parks, shortstop Herrewig also smashed a round-tripper in GC’s 20-run victory over KC.
Barba, a right-handed sophomore pitcher, tossed four innings and only allowed one run on three hits and struck out a pair of batters to get the win and improve to 4-1. Freshman righty Brynn Glidewell came on in relief and pitched one inning.
The Whitecaps will host Concordia University at 12 and 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Lassie League Complex, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
