The No. 13-ranked Galveston College Whitecaps righted the ship on Wednesday at Carter Field with a doubleheader sweep of Blinn College, 8-6 and 7-2.
With the sweep, the Whitecaps improved to 24-7 overall and 2-2 in the NJCAA DI South Conference. GC is in third place behind San Jacinto College-South (4-0, 22-14) and Alvin Community College (2-0, 15-14) in conference play.
“We got two good, quality conference wins against a competitive Blinn College team,” said Galveston College Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We had a few tough games over the past week, but we learned from them and are getting into the groove of conference competition.”
In GC’s most recent series, the Whitecaps fell to SJCS 4-3 and 15-7 to open up conference play last week.
In the first game against BC, the Whitecaps went up 4-0 in the second inning and added four more in the next two frames to increase their lead to 8-2.
The Buccaneers rallied in the late innings, but came up short in the end and GC prevailed 8-6.
Whitecaps right-handed freshman hurler Jenna Johnston pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out nine Buccaneers. Johnston picked up the win to improve to 13-3 on the season.
GC freshman shortstop Ella Herrewig led the way offensively by going 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Whitecaps took a slim 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning, when they unloaded for four unanswered runs to take a 6-0 advantage over the Bucs. BC got two runs back, but it turned out to be too little, too late, as GC cruised to a 7-2 victory.
Sophomore righthander Karlie Barba tossed six innings of four-hit ball and gave up a pair of runs. Barba struck out two Bucs to claim the win and improve to 9-3. Freshman righty Brynn Glidewell came on in relief in the seventh inning to secure the win for the Whitecaps.
GC visits Coastal Bend College and Lamar State College on March 23 and 25, respectively, and returns home on March 27 for a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. against Alvin Community College at the Lassie League Complex, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
