Galveston College’s TRIO Upward Bound, a federally funded college preparation program, bridged or transitioned their class of 2023 graduates into college this summer, which included intercollegiate competition and university campus visits.
GC UB students had the opportunity to visit Texas A&M University-Galveston, Texas Southern University, the Museum of Natural Science and participate in a TRIO Pre-College Academic Bowl Competition. The competition entailed competitions in math, science, College Bowl, persuasive speech, spelling, artistic expression and a few sporting events.
The competition was held between five pre-college programs from Texas Southern University, University of Houston-Downtown, College of the Mainland, Greater Houston Community Partners of Innovative Schools and Galveston College. The participants from the GC TRIO UB program excelled in the competition and won the overall Academic Bowl by accumulating the most points in each area.
At the end of five weeks, a select group of participants were nominated by their instructors to engage in a three-day educational enrichment and college tour. A group of 22 GC UB students visited Baylor University, The University of Texas-Arlington, Texas Wesleyan University and Texas Christian University. The students also had a chance to participate in an educational tour of the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
