Galveston College right-handed hurler John Alkire pitched six innings of three-hit ball and the Whitecaps rolled to an 8-1 victory over Coastal Bend College in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Bernard Davis Field.

Although GC dropped the nightcap to split the twin bill with CBC, the Whitecaps won the overall season series against the Cougars, four games to three.

GC’s record improved to 26-17 overall and 14-10 in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 South Conference. With the doubleheader split, the Whitecaps maintained their hold on third place, trailing only Blinn College (27-13, 19-5) and San Jacinto College-North (26-15, 18-6).

“Alkire pitched an all-around good game and our guys gave him a lot of run support,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “The second game didn’t turn out the way we hoped, but we won the season series and we’re still in the hunt for a spot in the regional tournament with 11 games left in the regular season.”

GC scored three in the first inning, three in the third and two more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead they never gave up.

Whitecaps sophomore infielder Jacob Bulcroft led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, he scored once and drove in another three runs. Fellow infielders Ashton Beaird went 2-for-2, walked twice and scored three times, while MD Conner went 1-for-2, also scored three runs and drove in a run. Outfielder Saul Soto went 1-for-2, scored once and drove in a pair of runs.

GC will visit Blinn College on Tuesday at 6 p.m., then return home for a single game against the same BC squad on Thursday at 6 p.m., at Bernard Davis Field. The Whitecaps will close out the weeklong, four-game series at Brenham against the Buccaneers on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
