Like all good things, winning streaks eventually come to an end, but before that happened, Galveston College ensured they won their weeklong series against Alvin Community College, taking three of the four games.

GC defeated ACC, 4-2, in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader to extend its winning streak to six games, but dropped the nightcap, 7-0. Last week, the Whitecaps beat the Dolphins 14-4 on April 2 and 6-4 on April 4.

With the split over the weekend, the Whitecaps (25-15 overall, 13-8 in conference) remained in third place in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 South Conference.

“We had a nice run for about a week or so, but we still have work to do to keep climbing and now we need to get back on the winning track,” said GC Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “The team has been playing well and we’re competing against very talented teams in our conference.”

Right-handed sophomore John Alkire (6-3) pitched a three-hit, complete seven-inning game and struck out half a dozen ACC batters en route to his sixth victory of the season.

The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the first two frames of the game before the Dolphins responded with a run of their own in the second inning to cut the visitors’ lead, 2-1.

GC added a third run in the fourth, while ACC kept pace with a score in the sixth before the Whitecaps added an insurance run in the seventh and final inning to secure the win, 4-2, in the opening game of the twin bill.

Left fielder Zachary Daigre scored twice for the Whitecaps, while right fielder Saul Soto and first baseman MD Conner each crossed the plate once to help GC win the first game.

GC will visit Coastal Bend College at 2 p.m. on April 11 before returning home for a twin bill against the same CBC squad on April 13 at 2 and 5 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
