Galveston College’s softball team captured a share of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Region 14 South Conference co-championship alongside Blinn College.
The Whitecaps’ third straight conference title also earned them a spot in the Region 14 Tournament.
GC will kick off tournament play on May 3 at noon, when the Whitecaps face Tyler Junior College. The tournament will be hosted by Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, Louisiana, and played May 3-6 at Cavalier Softball Field.
“We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes and coaching staff for their dedication and perseverance this season,” said GC Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We would have liked to win the conference outright, but a co-championship is still an accomplishment, and a lot of other teams would like to be in our position. Our team has played and worked hard to get here. The regular season is over and like everyone else in the regional tournament, we start over and will compete for a spot in the national tournament.”
Last season, the Whitecaps also won a share of the conference title and claimed the regional championship to advance to the NJCAA D1 World Series, where GC capped off an amazing run, finishing fifth in the nation.
The Whitecaps swept Angelina College on April 23 to finish the regular season with a 19-5 conference record, 30-12 overall. However, GC had to wait until Sunday to find out the fate of the conference championship because Blinn College had to reschedule its final two games due to heavy rain. BC (19-5, 23-21) defeated San Jacinto College-South in their doubleheader to finish in a tie with GC atop the South Conference.
The Buccaneers had the tie-breaker over the Whitecaps and earned the South Conference’s No. 1 seed for the regional tournament. GC is the No. 2-seeded team and face the North Conference’s No. 3-seeded squad, TJC (16-8, 35-15).
The regional tournament will be live-streamed on BPCC’s YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/@BossierParishCC/streams.
