Galveston Kiwanis Club to honor Andre Deroeun at Whitecaps season opener

The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team will take on the Temple College Leopards in its season opener Friday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, 83rd Street and Frank Giusti Drive, Galveston, Texas.

At 2:45 p.m. prior to the game, the Galveston Kiwanis Club will make a presentation in honor of Andre DeRouen, a member of the Whitecaps baseball team from League City, Texas, who drowned last year while rescuing his brother from a neighborhood pond.

Houston Astros announcer Bob Ford will emcee the event. Admission is free.

Four Galveston College Whitecaps sign National Letters of Intent with NCAA Division I universities

Four Galveston College baseball players signed National Letters of Intent Nov. 14 to play with three universities in Texas and Louisiana.

“We are excited to be sending another four student-athletes to outstanding NCAA Division I programs in our region,” said Whitecaps Head Coach Chris Joblin. “Each of these students is a solid player with an excellent record. It’s another great day to be a Whitecap.”

Those signing letters of intent included

  • Jacob Jimenez, sophomore right-handed pitcher, Houston, University of Texas at San Antonio;
  • Corbin Vines, sophomore third baseman, Hempstead, Texas, Sam Houston State University;
  • Erick Hernandez, sophomore catcher, Orlando, Florida, Nicholls State University; and
  • Jordan Lansford, sophomore right-handed pitcher, Wortham, Texas, Nicholls State University.

During Coach Joblin’s six years at Galveston College, the Whitecaps sent 35 players on to the NCAA Division I level, had seven players drafted in the MLB draft and had another player sign as a free agent.

The Whitecaps also have continued a tradition of academic excellence each year, with an impressive cumulative team grade-point average in excess of 3.0.

Nov. 14 marked the first day of the early signing period as athletes across the country sign their National Letters of Intent.

The Galveston College softball team welcomes outfielder Aspyn Grossman to the Whitecaps family.

Grossman, a standout senior at Bullard High School, signed with the Whitecaps on Nov. 5 at a ceremony at her high school in Bullard, Texas.

Bullard High Head Softball Coach Megan Dobrinski and the Grossman family joined Galveston College Head Softball Coach and Athletic Director Christa Hartnett for the signing ceremony.

As a sophomore, Grossman hit .414 with 40 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. As a junior, she hit .421 with 36 runs scored and 28 stolen bases.

Galveston College Whitecaps baseball opens fall play on Saturday at Wharton

The Galveston College baseball team will begin fall play  on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. when the Whitecaps take on the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers in Wharton, Texas.

Under the leadership of Coach Chris Joblin, the 2018 Whitecaps were very competitive, besting Wharton in the last game of the team’s final series to make it to the Region XIV Tournament, where the Whitecaps finished fourth overall.

During Coach Joblin’s six years at Galveston College, the Whitecaps have continued academic excellence with an impressive cumulative team GPA, over 3.0 every year. Over the course of the last six years, the Whitecaps have sent 31 players on to the NCAA Division 1 level and had seven players drafted in the MLB draft, and another player sign as a free agent.

Houston Astros honor Whitecaps Andre Derouen

The Houston Astros on Wednesday, Sept. 5, honored Galveston College Whitecaps baseball player Andre Derouen, Jr., who drowned in March after rescuing his younger brother from a pond near their home.

Andre was a fantastic and beloved athlete, having played both football and baseball for Hitchcock High School. He was also named Hitchcock ISD’s most valuable defensive baseball player his senior year in 2017.

“Andre brought so much joy to everyone around him,” said Chris Joblin, head coach of the Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team. “He is missed by everyone who knew him.”

Several dozen family members, friends and teammates were at the event to celebrate and honor Andre.  All of them wore custom-made T-shirts featuring Andre in his Whitecaps uniform and the Houston Astros’ classic orange star.

Coach Del retires after 20 years, 700+ wins

Friends, colleagues, student-athletes and family members gathered Tuesday, Aug. 28, to honor Coach Ken Delcambre, who retired Aug. 31 after 20 years and more than 700 wins as Whitecaps head softball coach and athletic director at Galveston College.

Coach Del, as he is known by players, friends and colleagues, spent a total of 35 years in coaching, including several years as assistant softball coach at Alvin Community College before joining Galveston College in 1998 to lead the school’s brand-new softball program.

Since that time, he has coached numerous National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIV champions. His Whitecaps have had two National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship appearances, and he has coached 10 NJCAA All-Americans, four NJCAA All-Americans and three Olympians. His coaching staff also was named NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

6 Whitecaps softball players named to 2018 NJCAA Region XIV South Zone all-conference teams

Six Whitecaps softball players have been named to the 2018 NJCAA Region XIV South Zone first and second all-conference teams.

The Whitecaps landed five players on the first team and one player on the second team. Ashley Kriesel, a sophomore from Houston, was named Region XIV South Zone Pitcher of the Year.  First team selections included Kriesel; Alyssa Martinez, shortstop; Kirsten Shaw, first base; Alexandria Lewis, second base; and Kayla Kerr, DP/UT. Outfielder Anahi Hoover was named to the second team.

The Whitecaps softball coaches attended a coaches meeting at San Jacinto College on Tuesday, May 1, for the all-conference team selections.  The Galveston College Whitecaps softball team has qualified for the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament to be held at the Lamar State College Port Arthur field in Port Arthur, Texas. The Whitecaps secured the South Zone #1 seed with a conference record of 20 wins and only four losses. The Whitecaps secured the South Zone #1 seed with a conference record of 20 wins and only four losses. The team’s first game is Friday, May 4, against the East Zone #4 seed, Angelina College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Galveston College Athletics

The Sarah H. Hermes Fitness Center connected to the Fine Arts Building features a gymnasium, weight-training equipment in a mirrored exercise room, showers and locker rooms on the first floor, H-100.  An aerobics classroom and spectator seating for viewing events in the gymnasium are located on the second floor.

GC students, faculty, staff, and retirees may use the Fitness Center during hours of operation. Lockers and locks are available, please see the front desk attendant for assistance.

Gym memberships are available for purchase at the Continuing Education office, M-140.  Please call (409)944-1344 for details.

Galveston College offers opportunities for students to participate in an Intercollegiate athletic program.  Presently, the Whitecaps compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I level in Women’s Softball and Men’s Baseball. Our athletic program is a member of NJCAA and Region XIV Athletic Conference, we compete according to the regulations and policies of the NJCAA and Region XIV Athletic Conference.

As a Division I institution, we are allowed to offer fully-funded scholarships to students. Academically, our institution offers a university-parallel curriculum that is designed for transferring our students to the university level. Our student/athlete transfer rate to universities or 4-year colleges is 100% for those individuals completing two years of eligibility and graduating from Galveston College (this does not include players that accepted professional opportunities).

The Galveston College women’s softball program is directed by Head Coach Christa Wallace. The Whitecaps softball program started in 1993 and has been known for its success in the classroom as well as on the field. The Whitecaps have claimed Region XIV Champions in 2007, 2008 and 2017 while also making 2 NJCAA National Tournament appearances. Many of our Whitecaps softball players have continued on to 4-year institutions such as Stephen F. Austin, Lamar University, Texas Women’s University, Southern University, and many more. Galveston College men’s baseball is directed by Head Coach Kevin Lallmann. The Whitecaps baseball program has been a solid program for junior college baseball since 1993. Many of our Whitecaps baseball players have continued on to universities such as L.S.U., Rice University, Texas A&M University and the University of Texas. Several players are now playing Major League baseball with teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Florida Marlins.
