Students who choose to pursue an Associates of Arts in speech communication will take the basic core curriculum as well as speech classes. Upon completion of this degree plan, students will be well situated to transfer to most four-year colleges in Texas and elsewhere.

Most mid-size to large companies have communication professionals on staff to help the organization communicate effectively with internal and external audiences. Communication staff can perform corporate training, and act as a spokesperson for an organization. Advertising, public relations, corporate communications, education, law, politics, and many other careers have a foundation in the field of speech communications.

The goal of the Speech Department at Galveston College is to help students become competent communicators. Speech is a practical field of study, and courses are designed to facilitate recognition of existing communication styles, improve communication skills, and then to transfer that knowledge into practical application. The program emphasizes the need to recognize and accommodate diversity in written and spoken forms of communication, and teaches students to use critical thinking skills to evaluate the receiver and context of the message, and then to adapt communication appropriately.
