Despite being hampered by weather-related game cancellations the past few weeks, Galveston College has weathered the storm and continues to improve, sweeping Monroe College on Feb. 27 and splitting a weekend twin bill against Northeast Texas Community College.

The Whitecaps have won seven of their last 10 games to improve to 11-5 overall in preparation for conference play, which begins on the road on Saturday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. against rival and conference co-champion San Jacinto College-South.

However, GC will have its final tune-up on Wednesday when the Whitecaps travel to Louisiana State University-Eunice for a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m.

“The team is coming together and starting to gel despite limited game time,” said GC Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “Weather-related cancellations have slowed our preparation for conference play, but our players worked hard, indoors when necessary, but it doesn’t replace playing against other teams. They’re resilient, improving every game, and will be ready for conference.”

GC defeated MC, 4-0 and 6-2, on Feb. 27, and split against NTCC, 6-1 and 2-0, on Saturday.

Against the Mustangs, sophomore right-handed hurler Jenna Johnston tossed a one-hitter to lead the Whitecaps to a 4-0 victory. Johnston struck out 10 Mustang hitters in seven innings for the win.

In the nightcap, GC tallied a pair of runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-2 lead, which they never gave up. Right-handed sophomore pitcher Brynn Glidewell (1-0) went the distance, allowing only two runs on five hits and striking out three MC batters to notch her first victory of the season.

Whitecaps sophomore center fielder Maddie Moore, freshman shortstop Alayna Davis, sophomore designated player Cady Bowyer and freshman first baseman Riley Riordan each contributed an RBI, and freshman second baseman Jordyn Comer added two more to help the Whitecaps sweep the Mustangs.

In Saturday’s first game, GC jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings and didn’t need anymore as they coasted to a 6-1 victory over NTCC.

Johnston pitched seven solid innings, giving up one run and four hits while striking out seven Eagles hitters to claim her second victory of the week and improved to 6-2.

GC sophomore third baseman Breigh Houser went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and catcher Bowyer went 1-for-4, scored a run and knocked in two.

In the second game, the home team scored single runs in the first and second inning, and Eagles starting pitcher, Conlee Zachery, went the distance, allowing only three hits and striking out 10 Whitecaps.

For GC, Glidewell went six innings, allowed only two runs on five hits and struck out four opposing batters. Glidewell was credited with the loss and evened her season record at 1-1.
