Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC)

The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology, or HVAC/R Program, at Galveston College, is designed to provide a combination of classroom theory, simulated troubleshooting, and hands-on training on the same equipment used by business and industry. 

Galveston College’s HVAC/R program uses the ESCO Group for examinations and certifications. Students will have the opportunity to obtain their EPA license, as well as credentialing that will allow them to demonstrate competence in the vital skills needed for entry-level employment into the HVAC industry. Along with the ESCO employment-ready certificates, students can also obtain three college certificates and an associate of applied science degree.

 

Overview

Galveston College's HVAC/R Technology Program believes in both a hands on approach as well as a in depth HVAC/R coverage of all subjects related. This program is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to be proficient in the HVAC/R industry. Students will learn on various types of HVAC/R Equipment that will provide the preparation for entry level jobs in the HVAC/R field.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of electricity, electrical current, circuitry, and air conditioning devices
  • Define refrigerant recovery, recycle, and reclaim terms
  • Install and troubleshoot complex electrical control devices

Students will have an opportunity to learn various HVAC/R processes that will provide the basic preparation for entry-level jobs in the field of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating with the initial focus placed on troubleshooting and service. In addition, they will learn the fundamentals of HVAC/R through hands-on training in (1) Theory of temperature control, (2) Electronics, (3) Design and construction of HVAC equipment, (4) Installation, (5) Maintenance, and (6) Repair. As students advance through the program, related topics of indoor air quality, load calculation, system design, and industry code standards will also be covered. Students are also given the opportunity to take the EPA certification test within the program. When job searching, this certification will allow the student to be more marketable in the HVAC/R field.

Graduates should be qualified to pass entry-level certification tests as required by business and industry.  In doing so, they will be prepared to enter a very high demand occupation with excellent earning potential.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor-Bureau of Labor Statistics, HVAC careers are expected to rise at an average rate of 9% per year for the next 10 years and HVAC career prospects for technicians with HVAC technician training are expected to be excellent, especially for those who have received training from an accredited institution.

Students will be introduced to several HVAC/R businesses that need entry level technicians. We will pair up employers with students in the HVAC/R program. There is also a need for estimators, on call services, inside and outside sales, building automation, and product distribution.
