Galveston College celebrated its 57th Annual Commencement Ceremony on May 16 at the Galveston Island Convention Center, recognizing the achievements of 690 graduates who earned a total of 844 degrees and certificates, including 50 dual credit students who earned their college degree before graduating from high school.

The graduation ceremony marked a proud milestone in the lives of students ranging in age from 17 to 73 years old, including traditional, non-traditional, and dual credit students from across Texas and beyond.

The ceremony showcased the diverse accomplishments and stories that define the Galveston College experience. Among this year’s graduates were students representing three countries, four states, and 97 Texas cities. In addition to the 50 dual credit students earning associate degrees, including the first-ever dual credit graduate from Odyssey Academy, 17 more students earned their credentials through the college’s dual credit program.

Two standout student speakers took the stage to share their journeys. Timothy Brown, a 17-year-old dual credit student, earned an Associate of Science degree with a 4.0 GPA. A three-year football player at Ball High School and a fixture on the President’s Honor List, Brown plans to study mechanical engineering at the University of Houston.

During the ceremony, Brown talked about the challenges he faced on his educational journey, from his struggle with suicide to the death of his father from sickle cell anemia. He encouraged his fellow graduates to always keep moving forward.

“I was ready to get rid of everything and I didn’t realize the impact it would have on others,” said Brown. “Even with the worst happening, I gave it my all. Always keep going. No matter what is happening negatively in life now, things will change. I’m glad I did it (dual credit) because I’m graduating with my associate degree before my high school graduation.”

Also delivering a powerful message was 38-year-old Alison Walker, a non-traditional student and mother to a 16-year-old daughter. Walker earned her Associate of Arts degree while maintaining her place on the President’s Honor Roll with a 4.0 GPA and actively participating in Phi Theta Kappa. She plans to continue her academic journey at Texas Southern University, majoring in finance.

Walker, who served the community for 15 years as a dispatcher for the police and fire departments and EMS, talked about how she became a mother and her path that eventually returned to college.

“Today is more than just a celebration of academic achievement,” said Walker. “It’s a celebration of every obstacle overcome, every sacrifice made, and every moment of doubt that we pushed through.”

In addition to the two student speakers, GC’s mascot, Rip Tide, made his first public appearance since the launch party on May 6 as part of GC’s graduation activities before the commencement ceremony. Rip Tide celebrated graduation with students and families, taking pictures and giving high-fives.
